Transit systems are leveraging the power of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to offer commuters convenient apps for purchasing and activating bus, subway, and train tickets. Transit operators no longer need to verify commuter tickets in BLE setups; as commuters walk through gates, BLE gateways automatically verify each digital ticket.

Applications use grid-based beacon deployments to track a commuter’s location in real-time and can offer textual or auditory directions. One of the earliest use-cases for beacons was aiding the visually impaired in navigating large retail environments and public facilities. These systems are tried and tested. This use-case is still in its fledgling phase. Los Angeles was one of the first cities to deploy beacons next to parking signs to alert spot seekers regarding up-to-the-second availabilities. The beauty of beacon-based proximity systems is the ability to use the same infrastructure for more than one use-case. Beacons at parking signs enable mobile payments via applications and can send visitors location-aware marketing and advertising campaigns for nearby sponsor businesses.

4. To avoid road accidents.

Beacons can be installed at problem intersections to send alerts to nearby pedestrians to take extra cautions. Custom applications can alert users and force them to pay attention by pausing phone activities. These applications are popular with parents who worry that their child is buried in their smartphone.

5. To send contextual offers to above-ground travelers.

Partnerships between transit companies and retailers are made possible by Bluetooth Light Energy proximity marketing campaigns. As a commuter spends the duration of their trip browsing or playing games on their phone, relevant and non-intrusive push-notifications are highly effective in driving foot traffic to local businesses. Commuters are attracted to stores with coupons, discounts, and special offers. It’s a win-win-win for transit companies, local business, and commuters.

6. Touchless payments –

Taxi cabs are leveraging BLE technology in customer’s smart devices to prompt mobile payments via one-click confirmations. Retailers such as Macy’s, Target, and McDonald’s have all deployed beacons for touchless payment, with great success.
